Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg landed on the injured list Sunday with right shoulder inflammation, after insisting that he was healthy after getting tagged for eight runs in his most recent outing.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Sunday that an MRI revealed Strasburg has “some inflammation” and that the organization wants “to be smart,” without divulging a timetable for a return.

“This is all about Stephen right now and taking care of Stephen to make sure that when he does come back, he’s ready to go,” Martinez said.

Strasburg also was angered after Tuesday’s 14-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals that he was shown on the television broadcast during the third inning of the game rubbing the area between his neck and shoulder while seated inside the tunnel between the dugout and the clubhouse.

“I think it’s a joke, to be honest, that they shoot in the tunnel,” Strasburg said after the game, in which his fastball velocity dipped to 91 mph. “There’s got to be some sort of safe place in the stadium. There have been plenty of other starts where something is not feeling right, and whether you treat yourself or you have a trainer come treat you, it’s just part of the business.

“I went out there and I gave it everything I had. It wasn’t good enough tonight. There should be some sort of privacy. People don’t watch the games on TV to watch some sort of spy camera watching what the player is doing in the tunnel.”

The 32-year-old righty’s latest stint on the IL is retroactive to April 15, with Paolo Espino summoned from the Nats’ alternate site to start in his place Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks

Strasburg, who signed a seven-year extension worth $245 million after going 5-0 in Washington’s run to the 2019 World Series title, was limited to two starts last season due to a nerve issue in his right hand.
