Aussie snowboarding icon Torah Bright is unapologetically proud of the mother she is.
After receiving backlash over a partially nude breastfeeding photo she shared to Instagram and Facebook on Mother’s Day, Bright sent an emotional message to fellow moms feeling unsupported about how they choose to parent.
“Reading some of these comments made me sad,” Bright wrote in a since-expired post on Instagram Stories — which included a topless image of her in a headstand while breastfeeding her 10-month-old son Flow. Her response was captured by news.com.au before it expired.
Bright is one of the more decorated athletes in Australia, winning the gold in the halfpipe at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and silver at Sochi four years later. She is also a two-time gold medalist at the X Games.
Bright initially shared the photo as part of a collage celebrating her first Mother’s Day. She welcomed Flow in July 2020 with husband Angus Thomson, who’s also a snowboarder.
While the majority of comments included praise for sharing the outdoor nursing snap, some critics called the image “insane,” among other things.
“In my world, mothers should be each other’s cheerleaders (it’s hard enough). Embrace our quirkiness and finding the joy in every sh—y thing that is motherhood,” the 34-year-old wrote.
“We all do it differently. It is not wrong or right. Motherhood is pure. I only now consider myself a Wonder Woman because I have joined the sacred MOTHERS club with you. Nothing but respect to all mothers.
“Love to all mothers who need it right now. I got your back. Every mother has been there. You are not alone. I’m not looking for praise. I never need strangers’ praises,” Bright continued. “I walk this earth to the beat of my own drum, led by my nutrition and search for love and joy … obviously.”
Bright also replied to critics and supporters in the comments of her post.
In response to an Instagram user who commented, “That’s just f—king weird. What are you trying to prove?,” Bright wrote, “interesting… are you intoxicated!!??”
Much like her snowboarding chops, Bright is just as confident in motherhood.
